For Christians all around the world, the celebration of Easter is focused on the death and resurrection of Jesus. However, these celebrations may look different in every country.
Today, staff writer, Linda Owino, from Open Arms Village in Kenya, will share with you about the celebration of Easter in Kenya.
"Kenya celebrates Easter over a four-day period beginning on Good Friday, which is punctuated by different religious ceremonies such as the way of the cross, Friday evening service, Good Friday lunchtime service and an all-night service known as “Kesha”.
On Holy Saturday, people spend time with their families. Often, people send Easter messages to their families and share quotes about Easter. Children present different plays, poems and songs about Easter to their families or at church.
Come Sunday, most people go to church to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus. There is a lot of singing that goes with this day as people remember the significance of the holiday. The rest of the day may be spent doing charity work, such as giving food to the needy, cleaning public areas, planting trees, or cooking for neighbors.
Easter celebrations continue on to Monday. Schools and work are closed on this day, as well. On Easter Monday, people typically prepare meals and feast with their families. Everyone is expected to participate in both the preparation and eating.
At Open Arms Village, the children prepare plays, memory verses, skits, poems and songs and present them at church on Easter Sunday. The pastor ensures that they understand the meaning and significance of Easter. Though this year may be different for many due to COVID restrictions, Pastor Okeyo reminds us that the most important things about Easter, which is the love of Christ, can still be shown to others regardless of any situation around the world."
From the Open Arms family to you and your's, I want to wish you a most joyous Easter full of the hope of Jesus! God bless you!
